Install Variety Wallpaper Changer on Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Archlinux

In a previous post, I showed you how to install and configure Variety Wallpaper on OpenSUSE Leap. You may want to install it on other Linux distributions as well. So in this post I will show you how to install Variety wallpaper changer on Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora and Archlinux.

Variety changes the desktop wallpaper regularly, using local or automatically downloaded images. Variety sits conveniently as an indicator in the panel and can be easily paused and resumed. The mouse wheel can be used to scroll wallpapers back and forth. Variety can fetch wallpapers from Flickr, Wallbase.cc, Wallpapers.net, NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day, Desktoppr.co. Media RSS feeds from Picasa, deviantART or any other place are also supported.

Install Variety on Debian 8

Variety isn’t in the software repository of Debian, so you have to manually download the deb file.

wget https://launchpadlibrarian.net/238315680/variety_0.6.0-0~549~201602122334~ubuntu14.04.1_all.deb

Now install gdebi and install variety with gdebi.

sudo apt-get install gdebi && sudo gdebi variety*.deb

Install Variety on Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Elementary OS

Add the official PPA for Variety.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:peterlevi/ppa
sudo apt update
sudo apt install variety variety-slideshow

Install Variety on Archlinux

Variety is in the community repository, so you can install it with pacman.

sudo pacman -S variety

Install Variety on Fedora

You can find the rpm package for Fedora 22 and Fedora 23 on rpmfind.net. Download the rpm package and then run the following command in terminal.

sudo dnf install variety*.rpm

If you can’t download the rpm package, then use wget like this.

wget ftp://195.220.108.108/linux/sourceforge/p/po/postinstaller/fedora/releases/22/x86_64/variety-0.5.3-1.fc22.noarch.rpm
