How To Install Skype on Elementary OS Freya

In this tutorial, I will show you how to install Skype on elementary OS 0.3.2 Freya.

If you’ve read my previous tutorial, then you know how easy it is to install Skype on Ubuntu. Elementary OS is based on the long-term support version of Ubuntu, in particular, Elementary OS 0.3.2 Freya is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. So it’s really a snap to install Skype on Elementary Os Freya. Follow the below instructions.

Install Skype on Elementary OS Freya

First, open the sources list file with nano text editor.

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

Find the following line and uncomment it, i.e, remove the # sign to enable Canonical partner repository.

# deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu trusty partner

How To Install Skype on Elementary OS Freya

If you can’t find it, then append this line to the end of this file.

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu trusty partner

Save and close this file.

Because the Skype client in Canonical partner repository is 32 bit so if you use 64 bit system then you will also need to add i386 architecture in Elementary OS with the following command.

 sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386

How To Install Skype on Elementary OS Freya

Now update local package index and install Skype.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install skype

Once the installation is complete, we can start Skype by typing skype in the terminal

skype

We can also launch Skype from pantheon menu.

On first launch you need to agree to Skype terms of use and Skype privacy policy.

Now we can log into Skype with Skype name or Microsoft account.
