How to Install Geary Mail on Ubuntu

Geary Mail is a free open source desktop email client developed by the Gnome project. The default mail client for Elementary OS, Pantheon Mail, is a fork of Geary. If you are looking for an alternative to thunderbird, then give Geary Mail a try. This tutorial is going to show you how to install Geary on Ubuntu.

Install Geary Mail on Ubuntu

Geary is available from Ubuntu software repository. You can use the following command to install it.

sudo apt update

sudo apt install geary

The Ubuntu 16.10 repository contains the latest 0.11.2 version, but Ubuntu 16.04 has version 0.11.0. If you like to get the latest updates as soon as possible, then use the following Geary PPA.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:geary-team/releases

sudo apt update

sudo apt install geary

Once installed, you can start it from Unity Dash or your favorite app launcher.

The set up wizard is quite straight-forward. Geary Mail already configured the SMTP and IMAP server settings for Gmail, Yahoo! Mail and Outlook.com. So signing in with one of these 3 email accounts doesn’t require you to manually enter SMTP and IMAP settings.

If you use other email services or have your own email server, then choose Other and then manually enter the SMTP and IMAP details.
