Install SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 on Ubuntu 16.04/Debian 8/Fedora/Arch Linux

SuperTuxKart, aka STK, released version 0.9.2 on July 1, 2016. It’s a free, open-source and cross-platform racing game available for Linux, OS X and Windows. It features the mascots of many open source project like Tux, Beastie, Pidgin, Wilber etc, with Mozilla Thunderbird being the referee.

Hightlights in version 0.9.2

• New AI (Artificial Intelligence) support for soccer mode
• Added 3 new arenas: “Icy Soccer Field” available for free; “Las Dunas” and “Candela City” available as gift packages for people donating to SuperTuxKart.
• New tracks including “Antediluvian Abyss” and ‘Volcan Isand”
• Added TTF (True Type Font) Font support which ensures nice display of all main languages
• the ability to record races and ghost replay

The scheduled networked multiplayer feature is unfortunately not available in this release.

Install SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 on Ubuntu 16.04/14.04, Debian Fedora Arch Linux

The SuperTuxKart binary package contains 32 bit and 64 bit libraries for any Linux distribution. It is hosted on SourceForge. So open a terminal window and use the below command to download the tar.xz archive.

wget http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/project/supertuxkart/SuperTuxKart/0.9.2/supertuxkart-0.9.2-linux.tar.xz

Wait for a while, have a cup of coffee because it’s a 468MB size file. Once the download is complete, run the following command to extract the tar.xz file.

tar xvf supertuxkart-0.9.2-linux.tar.xz

Then cd into the new directory.

cd supertuxkart-0.9.2-linux/

Here you will find a run_game.sh script. To run the SuperTuxKart 0.9.2 racing game, simply run the shell script.

./run_game.sh

New Arena – Icy Soccer Field

New track – Antediluvian Abyss

You can also move the supertuxkart directory and all its contents to /opt/ directory.

sudo mv supertuxkart-0.9.2-linux/ /opt/

Then create a symbolic link.

sudo ln /opt/supertuxkart-0.9.2-linux/run_game.sh /usr/bin/stk

Now you can just simply type stk command to launch the game.

For those who don’t know, there’s also a SuperTux game which is inspired by the Super Mario game.
